Gartmorn Dam - at the dam head

Gartmorn Dam, once an industrial powerhouse and water supply, now lies at the centre of Clackmannanshire's 370-acre Country Park and Nature Reserve.

The 170-acre reservoir was commissioned by Sir John Erskine, the 6th Earl of Mar, to power the pumps which drained his Sauchie mines. The water power his project provided was also the catalyst for Alloa's industrial development. The dam served for a time as Alloa's mains water supply.

There is a pedestrian path around the dam which links to an extensive path network throughout Clackmannanshire. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is an important site for migratory wildfowl in the winter months. Many birds also live at Gartmorn all year round and breed here in the summertime.

The dam and nature reserve provides country walk pathways with varying surfaces. largely flat paths. Some parking is available at the dam head, and the path from here to the south and east along the edge of the dam is tarmac for a while, before turning into the wooded areas around the dam.

A fine place to visit when the weather is fair.
