How to get to Clackmannanshire

Many of you will already have visited or lived in the beautiful county of Clackmannanshire, but for those who have not been so blessed, here is how you could travel to the wee county:

So where is it?

Clackmannanshire is the smallest county in Scotland, a fine stretch of land at the northern end of Great Britain. The county is located relatively centrally within the most populated area of Scotland, often referred to as the central belt. This means that Clackmannanshire is sandwiched between the large Cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, but also the smaller cities of Stirling, Perth, and Dundee are not too far away. All the while remaining relatively rural.

Travelling by Road

By road, Clackmannanshire is well served by Scotland's motorway network, with links to the east of the county at Kincardine and the M9 or M876, and to the west of the county via Stirling to the M9 or M80. Those travelling to the northeast can venture along the A977 to meet the M90 at Kinross onwards to Perth, Inverness, Dundee, or Aberdeen or to the northwest via Stirling and the A84, onwards to Oban or Fort William and the islands.

Travelling by Train

It takes just ten minutes by train from Stirling to Alloa, and Edinburgh or Glasgow (with their airport connections) can be reached in around an hour.  The Glasgow train is a direct transfer, Edinburgh train changes at Stirling.

Travelling by Bus

Services are available to Alloa and the surrounding villages, with direct routes to Alloa from Dunfermline and Stirling, and indirectly from Falkirk (via Larbert)

Travelling by Air

Most travellers arrive at Edinburgh or Glasgow airports which all have branches of leading car hire operators and taxi services.

Edinburgh Airport – a 24-hour bus service, every 10 mins at peak times and 30 mins at night, leaves outside the terminal and stops at Haymarket Terrace for rail services to Alloa (change at Stirling).

Glasgow Airport – a quarter hourly bus service taking around 25 mins leaves from outside the terminal and stops at Buchanan Street Bus Station for direct services to Alloa. Queen Street Railway Station is just a five-minute walk downhill from the bus station.
