The Black Devon Wetlands

The Black Devon Wetlands are located between Alloa and Clackmannan and sit on the northern bank of the River Forth.

The wetlands are spread over 38 hectares (94 acres) of dry and wet grasslands as well as a variety of pools. RSPB Scotland now manage the site after leasing it from Clackmannanshire Council. They have been working to return the land into a variety of wildlife habitats as well as allowing people access to enjoy the wildlife found around this stretch of the River Forth. The land, pools and various grasslands are managed in such a way as to encourage breeding and wintering of a variety of birds such as wildfowl and waders as well as wildlife.

New boardwalks and paths allow easier access to the viewing areas and screens as well as the pond dipping platform. The viewing screen is very popular as it allows views over the wetlands and helps to minimise any distress to any birds that are present. Along the top of the viewing screen are twelve metal panels which represent some of the species found at the reserve as well as acknowledging the site's industrial past.

The site has previously been occupied by an Aeroplane Factory and more recently by a mine works. Local schools make use of the wetlands introducing local school children to what is naturally present in their local area. There are regularly Family Fun Days at which pond dipping is a favourite activity.

A panoramic view of the wetlands can be enjoyed from the viewing mound, which the paths lead to. Access is normally from Alloa and the postcode the site sits within is FK10 1BZ.

The site unfortunately doesn't have a specified parking area but there is some parking nearby. The site can also be entered from Clackmannan on foot via Craigrie Road, at the bottom of the hill just past the farmhouse the signage for the Wetlands starts. There is no access for cars from this end.
